Why I Do Not Have A TV
In 1938, at the very dawn of the age of television, news anchorman, E.B. White uttered these words:
"I believe TV is going to be the test of the modern world, and in this new opportunity to see beyond the range of our vision, we shall discover either a new and unbearable disturbance of the general peace or a saving radiance in the sky. We shall stand or fall by TV, of that I am quite sure."
Well, we have had over half a century to put TV to the test, and it has failed miserably. Not only has TV become "an unbearable disturbance," it has become one of Satan's chief devices in his deceitful plot to destroy our nation.
Ninety-seven percent of all American homes have at least one TV, but I don't. After several years of Bible reading and study, I personally cannot see the need for a TV in my home. In fact, I can think of a few good reasons for NOT having one! In this tract, I'd like to give four reasons why I do not have a TV.
The Bible Says Not to Listen to Lies
According to Proverbs 17:4, "A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips..." A righteous man doesn't listen to a liar! The Lord Jesus said that THE DEVIL is the father of lies (John. 8:44), so it's EVIL to sit around listening to lies.
One doesn't have to watch much TV to realize that the networks are well trained pathological liars! (That's not an overstatement.) Through network news and standard programming, the perverted philosophies of the liberal media are channeled straight into the American home. You don't get the truth on TV; you get THEIR VIEWPOINT.
You don't receive the real news from the networks. You receive THEIR COMMENTS about what THEY wish to report. They do the filming, the editing, and the reporting. You receive what they want you to receive, and they give you what gives them the highest ratings. That's how it works. Truth is not essential. The "nightly news" isn't news at all; it's propaganda--just one big lie after another.
The regular programming is even worse. You may think that you are just getting "entertainment," but you're getting a lot more. TV POISONS your soul with falsehood.
In the TV world, sex perverts are actually "gay," drunkards are "alcoholics," communists are "political activists," dopeheads are "chemically dependant," adulterers are "having an affair," and fornication is "free love" or "pre-marital sex." There are no welfare bums on TV, for they are all "oppressed minorities." Good old fashion discipline has become "child abuse," and moral standards have been conveniently transformed into a "value system." They're calling evil "good" and good "evil" (Isa. 5:20). They're trying to polish up sin and make it look attractive, because they're crooked sinners.
The TV networks are the biggest double-tongued liars around. They never can tell it like it is! These people have proven time and time again that they are professional liars, and the Bible says not to listen to them.
The Bible Says to Abstain from All Appearance of Evil
We are told this in I Thessalonians 5:22. If it's evil, then we have no business looking at it. David said, "I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes. . ." David knew from personal experience that looking at the wrong thing could be very harmful. Before he ever committed his sin with Bathsheba, he first allowed his eyes to LOOK upon her nude body (II Sam. 11:2). In Joshua 7:21, Achan sinned after he SAW the "Babylonish garment." In Eden, Eve sinned after she feasted her eyes upon the forbidden fruit (Gen. 3:6).
Satan tempted the Lord Jesus by SHOWING Him all the kingdoms of this world (Lk. 4:5), and he will tempt you the same way. Satan will use TV to tempt you.
You say, "I don't let TV influence me. I don't yield to the temptations." That probably isn't true, but even if you don't yield to the temptations you are still LOOKING AT EVIL, and the Bible told you not to do so! Would the Lord Jesus sit and watch the same programs that you watch? Would He sit there and watch the same sex and violence that you watch? Well, would He? Think about it.
The Bible Says Not to Fellowship with Devils
Paul writes in I Corinthians 10:20, ". . . .I would not that ye should have fellowship with Devils." Then in II John 9-11 we are told not to allow anyone into our homes who doesn't abide in the doctrine of Christ.
Friend, do you think Hollywood abides in the doctrine of Christ? Do you think that bunch of cursing fornicators out in Hollywood are Christian people? Listen, those people on your television have absolutely NO USE for Jesus Christ. Those people are caught up in humanism, spiritism, atheism, materialism, and gross immorality! Hollywood has no use for the Lord Jesus Christ, and I have no use for Hollywood! I refuse to let total strangers march right into my home and indoctrinate my family with their hellish ways. I refuse to fellowship with devils! My Bible tells me to RESIST the devil (Js. 4:7), not invite him into my home!
The Bible Says for Us to Redeem the Time
We are told in Ephesians 5:16 to redeem the time, because the days are evil. Time is valuable. As someone has said, "You can't kill time without injuring eternity."
America's favorite pastime is NOT baseball; it's television! By the age of eighteen, the average young person has wasted over THREE YEARS of his life watching TV! If you spend only two hours each day watching TV, you will waste ONE FULL YEAR every twelve years! That's SIX WASTED YEARS out of a seventy-two year life! How many years have you already wasted? Are you prepared to stand before God and give account for that wasted time? What are you doing with the 168 hours per week that God gives you?
Friend, stop wasting time and start redeeming time, because life is too short to waste.
If you've never received Jesus Christ as your Savior, please contact us immediately, for nothing in this world is more important than your personal salvation in Christ.
Furthermore, John Davis:
Are you planning to watch a lot of TV this Christmas?
TV vs. AV!!! - The 23rd Channel vs. The 23rd Psalm!
The T.V. set is my shepherd. My spiritual growth shall want. It maketh me to sit down and do nothing for His name’s sake, because it requireth all my spare time. It keepeth me from doing my duty as a Christian, because it presenteth so many good shows that I must see. It restoreth my knowledge of the things of the world, and keepeth me from the study of God’s word. It leadeth me in the paths of failing to attend the evening worship services, and doing nothing in the Kingdom of God. Yea, though I live to be a hundred, I shall keep on viewing my T.V. as long as it will work, for it is my closest companion. Its sounds and its pictures they comfort me. It presenteth entertainment before me, and keepeth me from doing important things with my family. It fills my head with ideas which differ from those set forth in the word of God. Surely, no good thing will come of my life, because my T.V. offereth me no good time to do the will of God; thus I will dwell in spiritual poverty all the days of my life.
The TV is desensitising & conditioning people; it is ‘PROGRAMMING’ them to act like Zombies! (Zombie = a corpse, a lifeless, apathetic, or completely unresponsive person –isn’t that true of folks today?) I wonder how many Christians had a TV for Christmas? Most Christians haven’t a clue what is happening & are wilfully ignorant of Satan’s devices! (2 Cor 2v11, 2 Pet 3v5)How about the following verses regarding TV!!!Ps 101v3 I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: Deut7v26 Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing. Lam3v51 Mine eye affecteth mine heart...Mat 6v22 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.23 But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! Phil 4v8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Now go on, ‘justify’ why you watch TV!
